Follow the brown signs

In the midst of the Hampshire countryside is Silchester Roman Town. Much of it is archaeology (there is an ongoing dig, which has open days now and then) but you can walk the walls – they are surprisingly high, still – and visit the well-preserved amphitheatre. The village of Silchester boasts at least one very nice pub, which might make a fitting conclusion to a visit to this open air English Heritage site.
