Woodhorn
Entrance is FREE!
Woodhorn is a great museum about life in the mining communities of SE Northumberland. It is home to the unique collection of art by the Ashington Group – more affectionately known now as The Pitmen Painters – the same guys from the play written about the group by Billy Elliot writer, Lee Hall. As well as fantastic exhibitions, Woodhorn is home to the Northumberland archives with 800 years of publically accessible documents and records. The whole thing is set in Grade 2 and 2* listed colliery buildings. Together it is classed as a scheduled ancient monument so even without its great displays and activities, it’s something very special. Woodhorn is the perfect way to understand why this corner of Northumberland is the way it is.
